This year, we went through several weeks of humid, rainy weather.

The air felt heavy, clothes took longer to dry, and even paper packaging and velvet-lined boxes seemed to hold on to a little moisture. During that stretch of weather, we decided to try a small jewelry storage comparison of our own.

We took two identical S925 sterling silver pieces and kept them in the same environment for the same length of time.

There was only one difference.

One piece was placed directly inside a velvet jewelry box. The other was placed inside a moisture-resistant storage pouch first, and then put into the same type of jewelry box.

After some time had passed, we opened both boxes again.

The piece stored directly inside the velvet box had developed visible tarnishing and looked noticeably darker. The piece protected inside the storage pouch was still bright and polished.

This was not a laboratory experiment. It was simply a small comparison we carried out to better understand how everyday storage affects sterling silver. Still, the difference was clear.

A beautiful jewelry box can protect a piece from scratches and impact, but it does not necessarily protect it from moisture in the air.

During long periods of rain and high humidity, velvet, fabric and foam linings can also absorb moisture. A piece of jewelry may look safely tucked away inside its box while still being exposed to a damp environment.

That small comparison confirmed something important for us: S925 jewelry needs more than attractive packaging. It also needs a practical way to be stored between wears.

Can Genuine S925 Sterling Silver Tarnish?

Yes, it can.

S925 sterling silver is made with 92.5% silver, combined with a small percentage of other metals to give the jewelry greater strength and durability.

Silver naturally reacts to its surroundings. Humidity, air exposure, perspiration, perfume, body lotion and skincare products can all affect its surface over time. A genuine sterling silver piece may gradually lose some of its original brightness or develop darker areas.

Tarnishing does not automatically mean that the jewelry is fake or poorly made. In many cases, it is simply a normal characteristic of real silver.

Genuine S925 sterling silver can tarnish, but thoughtful care and proper storage can significantly slow the process.

At the same time, a stamp reading 925 or S925 is not, by itself, absolute proof of the material. A hallmark is a useful clue, but hallmarks can also be copied.

Popular home checks involving magnets, ice, sound or polishing marks can sometimes provide limited information, but they cannot reliably verify every piece. Necklace clasps may contain small internal springs, while plated finishes, enamel, gemstones and other design elements can affect how jewelry responds to these tests.

When the material needs to be confirmed, professional testing remains the most reliable method.

When a Price Seems Unusually Low

A higher price does not automatically guarantee genuine sterling silver, and a lower price does not prove that a piece is fake.

However, silver has a real material cost. A finished piece of jewelry may also involve design, polishing, stone setting, plating, assembly and quality inspection.

If a piece described as solid or sterling silver throughout is priced far below what those basic materials and processes would normally allow, it is reasonable to ask a few more questions.

Is the entire piece S925 sterling silver, or are only certain parts—such as the earring post or clasp—made from silver?

Is it sterling silver throughout, or is it a base-metal piece with silver plating?

Does the seller clearly explain the material, and are they prepared to take responsibility for that description?

There is nothing wrong with finding a good price. But when the price and the material claim seem difficult to reconcile, a little caution is worthwhile.

A hallmark is a clue, price provides context, and professional material testing offers the clearest confirmation.

Simple Ways to Care for S925 Jewelry

Sterling silver does not need an overly complicated care routine.

Apply perfume, skincare products and body lotion before putting on your jewelry. This helps reduce the amount of product transferred directly onto the silver.

It is also best to remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, exercising, visiting a hot spring or using household cleaning products. Chlorine, cleaning chemicals, perspiration and prolonged heat or moisture can affect silver as well as gemstones, enamel and plated finishes.

After wearing your jewelry, gently wipe it with the polishing cloth provided. Make sure the piece is completely dry before placing it inside its individual moisture-resistant pouch.

Fasten necklace clasps before storage to help prevent tangling. Rings, earrings, pendants and chains are also best kept separately, so they do not rub against one another and develop small scratches.

If a piece includes pearls, enamel, resin, gemstones or a special plated finish, avoid soaking the entire item in a strong silver-cleaning solution. Products designed to remove tarnish from plain silver may affect other materials, adhesives or surface treatments.

These are small habits, but they can make a meaningful difference in how a favorite piece looks and feels over time.
